[Food] Quick Bites, a Vietnamese-style café @Pavillion KL

Pavillion KL has recently renovated  and opened a new food stores corner in Level 1 (food court level). One of the eye-catching new food store is Quick Bites, a Vietnamese-style food café. With offering of the no MSG, freshly prepared, and processed-meat-free concept, it is especially outstanding in the eyes of those shoppers who pursuing healthier living standard near to the area.

The preparing bench

The "Bahn mi" (Vietnamese name of sandwich) is combining the meat filling with the French baguette. They taste even better than the commercial Subway sandwiches, honestly.

Menu
Food category: Sandwiches, Noodles, Spring rolls, Beverages, and snack.
Menu of set meals
Our order was the best-seller "Lemongrass chicken sandwich" (A la carte price RM 11.80). The french baguette is crispy followed by the soft chewy crumb, obvious of its freshness (I could say it must be made on the same day). The meat filling is topped with some vegetables such as slices carrots, jalapeño peppers, pickled daikon, coriander together with the mayo sauce. I love the combination of the vegetables to give the unique savory taste to the filling.

The drink comes together with the combo set of meal (RM 12.80). You can choose either peach iced tea (Ala carte price RM 5.00), red tea soya (Ala carte price RM 5.00), or mineral water. We ordered the red tea soya, surprising impressed by the sugarless healthy taste, though it might be too plain for some of the Malaysian who loves sweet. However, I personally enlighten by the less-sweet drink.

A little bit imperfect is that the place didn't offer any seats for a stop of eating. They serves the famous vietnamese cold noodle too but in a take-away package only.

Vietnamese noodles (ranged from RM 11.80 - RM 15.00).

Unlike to the other Vietnamese food in Malaysia, Quick Bite aimed a majority of public by not selling the non-halal pork meat. Well, it's a good attempt to serve more coverage of customers.

[Awareness] I'm finished with FINS

World Vision Malaysia is having a campaign "I'm finished with fins" at Midvalley Megamall (South Court) on 19 - 30 March 2014.

It is to spread the awareness to stop hunting for Shark Fins.

What's the matter?
Shark mature late until they're 10-20 years old, have long pregnancy (8months - 1 year), and breed only once every 2-3 years, give birth to a small number of life young (3-20 in average).

But!!

People kill up to 100 million sharks per year since 90's until now. We are depleting shark populations in a extremely fast rate.

1/3 of shark species are in trouble
> 120 species are listed as "threatened"

Why should I care if sharks go extinct?
Sharks is the "Keystone" species, to keep our oceans in a healthy & critical balanace.
Example A:
In the mid-Atlantic coast, local sharks have disappeared due to overfishing. Without the predator, Cownose Ray population exploded and they overly eaten the scallops. It is seriously ruined the scallop fishery business there.

Example B:
In Caribbean, removal of sharks lead to rise in Groupers fish. Groupers ate algae-eating parrotfish. Without parrotfish to keep reefs clear of algae, the coral reef choked and the fishes which rely on reef environment are gradually gone, an underwater desert zone aplydinpears.

Without sharks, the marine ecosystem loses her balance. It causes bad things to happen, incuding things we eat (seafood) and breathe (The ocean produce 1/3 of the our planet's O2 and absorb over 50% of the CO2 from the atmosphere).

We need the ocean...
ocean needs sharks...
Therefore, we need sharks.

Why is Malaysia involved?
Malaysia is the 8th highest catchers globally,
 - caught 231,212 tonnes* of sharks from 2002 to 2011, accounting for 2.9 % of the total global reported shark catch during that period.
 - Over the past 25 years, about 98% of the Sabah's Sharks had disappeared due to overfishing, according to Sabah Tourism and Environment Minister Masidi Manjun.

Malaysia imported 6,896 tonnes of shark's fin* (dried, prepared and salted) during the period 2000-2009, the 4th highest importer globally.

*Refer to Traffic's study - Intro the deep: Implementing CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) measures for commercially-valuable sharks and manta rays.

What can we do?
We curb the demand. Stop paying for shark fins. Not in restaurants. Not in your soup.

[Food] Butter Up Pastry @ Seri Kembangan, Selangor

It was rare to have some theme-like special restaurants opened around the area of Seri Kembangan, a near-to-town Hakka Kampung Cina. Not saying that Seri Kembangan was a rural-like undeveloped area, in fact, it has plenty of home-based nice Chinese food as well as the branches of the hyper-restaurants.

When I first saw Butter Up, what makes me stunted is the design of this restaurant, a refreshing Holland countryside style. With the wooden decoration and blue-white cotton sofa seats, the restaurant gives a tone of cosy and warm feelings, which is a very good place to have the gathering with family and friends.

The food overall is nice and delicious. Counting are the western sandwiches, salads, pastas, and pizzas. The prices are moderate, ranged from RM 6 ++ to RM 21 ++.
Smoked salmon sandwich (RM 11.00)
Mummy best choice's for kids (RM 13.00)

Smoked salmon lies on pizza (RM 21.00)

Riped tomatoes on the beach (RM 6.80)
Pasta - Chicken eats tomato (RM 12.90)
Pasta - Creamy chicken (RM 13.90)

These are the best seller drinks, the chef makes them freshly everyday into the big junks. I especially love the Summer Lemonade, very refreshing.

Left: Summer lemonade (RM 5.00), Right : Seasonal lemonade (RM 5.00)

They are using Illy coffee, which is one of the famous brands. The cappuccino is served with finger cookie, an adorable spoon-shaped and taste like digestive biscuits. Nice!

Cappuccino (RM 6.80)

There is a bakery corner selling healthy artisan breads. I especially love the honey milk bread, however this bread is only on sale occasionally.

Cake section. What I can say is, their cakes still need a big room to improve the texture taste but the outlooks are attractive.
